Numbers 20:8 - - “Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus, you shall bring water for them out of the rock and give drink to the congregation and their animals.

 

When Rock is referenced in the Old Testament it speaks of God’s strength, it symbolizes a refuge to those in need.  When Rock is referenced in the New Testament it refers to Jesus Christ! Corinthians 10:4 “and they drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual Rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

The meaning of “Rock” can vary depend on the context, but it generally symbolizes God, Jesus Christ, or the foundation of the Christian faith.

Water is the symbol of life and salvation. Water is used to symbolize faith, salvation and provision. Isaiah 12:3 & Numbers 20:8.

It can symbolize the spiritual cleansing that comes with the acceptance of God’s offer of salvation.  Ezekiel 36:25.

Living water – Jesus Christ refers to himself as the living water, John 4:10.

In Numbers 20:8 we see a foreshadow of Christ the Living Water.  the children of Israel began to complain to Moses and Aaron when there was no water.  Saying they should have died with the brethren before he Lord.  So, Moses and Aaron went to the tabernacle and fell on their faces and the glory of the Lord appeared to them.  The Lord told to gather the assembly together and speak to the Rock and water shall come forth for the assembly and the animals. 

This scripture comes to remind us to do exactly as God directs us.
